Brooklyn Brass Quintet

The Brooklyn Brass Quintet

The Brooklyn Brass Quintet is a chamber ensemble of classically trained brass musicians, based in the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City. Peforming recitals and outreach concerts all over New York State, the group demostrates an eclectic mix of styles and genres, which is its calling card. Playing everything from J.S. Bach to Frank Zappa, and everything in between, the Brooklyn Brass Quintet's five members actively arrange and comission works specifically for the group.

The Brooklyn Brass Quintet is comprised entirely of graduates of the world-renowned Eastman School of Music. The five member ensemble is made up of Michael Gurfield and Matthew Mead on trumpet, Matt Marks on french horn, Sean Reed on trombone, and John Altieri plucks up those funky basslines on tuba.

The Quintet has been together in one form or another for ten years. Three of the members began playing together while still in high school, and the other members joined on during their tenure at Eastman. The group performed live on KUSC in Los Angeles, been a featured member of the Chamber Music Series at Canada's Banff Centre for the Arts Summer Music series, toured the East and West Coasts, and performed for and with such artists as Jens Lindemann, Eric Ewazen, The Canadian Brass, James Thompson, Martin Hackleman, and Alain Trudell.

Our Mission

The Brooklyn Brass Quintet seeks to bring their love of music to everyone from seasoned chamber music audiences, to fresh ears that have never heard a live concert. The group performs all the pillars of the brass quintet repertoire, and uses arrangements of string quartet pieces to showcase the versatility of brass instruments. Additionally, the Brooklyn Brass Quintet actively seeks to comission young composers to write music for the quintet. The group performs a wide variety of shows and recitals, from educational outreach programs aimed at K-8th graders, to full recital program, to intimate chamber settings. Additionally, the group's members are all active teachers and clinicians, and regularly give lessons and master classes both in New York City, and when on tour. In these ways, the Brooklyn Brass Quintet feels we are part of the living organism that is creating music.
